Waterproofing

Waterproofing involves applying a barrier to prevent water from penetrating concrete structures. This barrier can be applied externally or internally, depending on the specific requirements of the structure.

Tanking

Tanking is a type of waterproofing that specifically involves the application of a waterproof membrane or coating directly to the surface of a structure, creating an impermeable barrier. It is often used in below-ground structures, like basements or tunnels, where water ingress is a significant concern.

How They Work Together

In many projects, tanking and waterproofing are used together. After an initial investigation to determine the extent of water ingress and structural vulnerabilities, tanking may be applied as part of a broader waterproofing strategy. This ensures a robust and comprehensive solution that protects the structure from water damage.

Downhill Castlerock Tunnel

We installed a waterproof membrane over the arch barrel and completed injection from the underside through cored holes in the brickwork, with injection points placed at 250mm centres. This ensured a comprehensive waterproofing system that addressed the challenges posed by the tunnel's environment. (pictured before and after)
